Centreville, VA
History
Centreville, formally known as Newgate in the 1760’s, was a town established with a pattern of mixed residential and commercial use. Frame houses, several taverns, stores, blacksmith shops, tanyards, and a school house were constructed on the 1/2 acre town lots. In 1792, the landowner petitioners reasoned that the name Centreville would be appropriate for a town on the turnpike road leading from the Northwest Territory and centrally located to Alexandria, Colchester, Dumfries, Middleburg, Georgetown, Warrenton, and Leesburg. Centreville acquired its name due to its central location.
During the Civil War, several battles were fought nearby including the First and Second Battle of Manassas, and the Battle of Chantilly. The town served as a supply depot for both military sides at various points in the war, and was famous for being the site of the construction of the first railroad ever built exclusively for military use.
Today Centreville has become a popular suburb of Washington, D.C. and part of Fairfax County. Most growth occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s due the influx of technology companies. As of the 2010 census, there is a population of 71,135 people and 25,516 households

The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail runs through Fairfax County, offering one of the region’s best, and safest, routes for recreational walking and biking. In addition, nine miles of the Mount Vernon Trail runs through Fairfax County along the Potomac River.

Award-Winning Schools
Students in Centreville attend Fairfax County Public Schools, which have been recognized for high on-time graduation rates, student diversity, and merit scholarship recipients.
Fairfax is also home to great colleges and universities. George Mason University, the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is located just to the south of the Fairfax city limits. Northern Virginia Community College, the second largest multi-campus community college in the United States, and the largest educational institution in Virginia, has its Annandale Campus immediately to the east of the city limits.
